FAQs

Improving your relationship with food is a process and it does take time. Body Guard will support you in that process and push back against diet culture. Body guard is different because it gives you access to course information 24 hours a day 7 days a week.   When you are having a moment of uncertainty or panic, course material is immediately available to support you!

That’s fantastic that you have a treatment team! I highly encourage working with professionals or a team of professionals to help you improve your relationship with food. The messages and information provided in Body Guard are consistent with Intuitive Eating and Health At Every Size. If your clinician works in this area then Body Guard will certainly provide additional information to supplement the work you are already doing. I do recommend discussing the product with your team to see how this can support you.

If your clinician doesn’t work with this area then even more emphatically, YES- body guard will support you in improving your relationship with food and will enhance the work that you are already doing.

If your provider adopts a no white flour, no white sugar model for improving your relationship with food then Body Guard will not be consistent with the messages that your provider is using. Body Guard may not be the best fit for you. However, if you are looking to try a different approach- then Body Guard can help get you started.

Focus on weight loss is a message from diet culture. Body Guard is will not focus on weight, shape, or size other than to counter the toxic messages from diet culture or to help decode the emotion that accompanies that fat feeling. If you’re hoping to lose weight so that you can feel better- know that this too is a false message from diet culture- and that losing weight doesn’t mean that you will feel better. Feelings come from your brain. Changing your body size doesn’t change your brain. Your thoughts and feelings will remain the same even if your body changes. Body Guard focuses on changing the brain (thoughts and feelings) which will help you feel better and more confident regardless of your body shape or size.

Body Guard can be used on it’s own, however it’s effectiveness will depend on how disconnected you are from food and your body. Body Guard works best when used to supplement the work that you are doing with a clinician to improve your relationship with food.

Hi There!  I’m Sara Upson, a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, Licensed Dietitian and Certified Eating Disorder Specialist.  I know first hand how difficult it is to go through the recovery process and make peace with food while being immersed in diet culture.  In the beginning, my weight was fine, but I didn’t think that.  I followed the rules of diet culture and found my way to a very miserable and lonely place where constant food thoughts ruled my life and eating behaviors were out of control.  I was miserable and diet culture told me what I was doing wasn’t enough, that I just needed to do more.  It wasn’t until a good friend forced encouraged me to get help that things started to change.  I started working with a treatment team and learned about challenging messages from society.  It wasn’t called diet culture at that time, but having that word to describe it now makes it much more accurate.  As my eating and behaviors improved, my body changed.  Diet culture pushed back hard when a family member told me I was fat and needed to lose weight.  Normally I would have been right back in behaviors, but this time was different.  I pushed back against diet culture.  Through this I discovered how to directly challenge diet culture messages and get to the root of the problem.  What I figured out is that there are two messages we have to challenge, what diet culture says and what you say to yourself.  What this did for me was give me the freedom to separate from diet culture to enjoy food and life again.  I didn’t plan initially to become a dietitian, but the desire to help others changed my career path.  It’s not just my life that has benefited from this knowledge, it’s also my clients.   Through the years, while working with individual clients, I have seen how much harder diet culture makes the recovery process and I’ve had enough! Diet Culture Sucks!  It only makes food thoughts and behaviors worse, which is the exact opposite of what you are trying to do.  That’s why I created Body Guard: Defense Against Diet Culture.  It’s here to support you in moving forward to directly counter those messages from diet culture.  I’m so excited to help you!
